Why is ventilation necessary? In any environment where we live, work and interact with other individuals, ventilation is a very important factor to take into account, since it guarantees better conditions of hygiene and comfort, thus avoiding the spread of diseases and air pollution. .
In places that do not have sufficient air renewal, we can notice that the environment quickly becomes saturated with odors, water vapor, carbon dioxide, smoke, viruses, etc., making it difficult to breathe due to the contaminated air.
Man directly or indirectly pollutes the places he lives.
He does it direct way with their own odors, with the excessive increase in humidity through breathing and perspiration, with the increase in body temperature and when carbon dioxide is above acceptable limits.
Furthermore, it pollutes indirect way with the activities you carry out, such as smoke, kitchen fumes, various professional activities, etc.
To all this, it is necessary to add the condensation phenomena due to humidity and all forms of production that society originates.
It is for this reason that it is essential to renew the air to obtain purer and cleaner air.
There are two possible ways to renew the air in different environments:
1) Natural ventilation: opening windows and doors. The ideal is to achieve cross ventilation so that air can circulate, that is, open windows/doors that are facing each other to achieve that air flow.
2) Mechanical ventilation: The renewal of the environment is done by means of an extractor fan, whether it is a small one like those in the bathroom, or in offices, gyms, warehouses, among others. Mechanical ventilation is required when we do not have windows to ventilate or when it is not enough to renew the air in the environment in which we are.
How to Ensure Correct Ventilation?
An operating exhaust fan creates a depression in the space that draws external air from the available openings. If there is only one opening in the room, the air will pass through it, resulting in homogeneous ventilation (fig. 1).
If there are two openings (fig. 2), the air will penetrate in greater quantities through the opening closest to the appliance and the ventilation will not be uniform: excessive near the extraction point, scarce in the rest of the room. The effectiveness of an extraction system is closely related to the air inlets and outlets , since, to obtain satisfactory ventilation, the aspiration points and natural openings must be arranged so that fresh air passes through all points. of the premises (fig. 3 and 4).
It is often preferable to install more smaller devices than just one high-power one.
